Having entered the Christmas season, we ask those who find the work of the Mystagogy Resource Center beneficial to them to help us continue our work with a generous financial gift as you are able. As an incentive, we are offering the following booklet.

In 1909 the German philosopher Arthur Drews wrote a book called "The Myth of Christ", which New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman has called "arguably the most influential mythicist book ever produced," arguing that Jesus Christ never existed and was simply a myth influenced by more ancient myths. The reason this book was so influential was because Vladimir Lenin read it and was convinced that Jesus never existed, thus justifying his actions in promoting atheism and suppressing the Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union. Moreover, the ideologues of the Third Reich would go on to implement the views of Drews to create a new "Aryan religion," viewing Jesus as an Aryan figure fighting against Jewish materialism.

Due to the tremendous influence of this book in his time, George Florovsky viewed the arguments presented therein as very weak and easily refutable, which led him to write a refutation of this text which was published in Russian by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1929. This apologetic brochure titled "Did Christ Live? Historical Evidence of Christ" was one of the first texts of his published to promote his Neopatristic Synthesis, bringing the patristic heritage to modern historical and cultural conditions. With the revival of these views among some in our time, this text is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Never before published in English, it is now available for anyone who donates at least $20 to the Mystagogy Resource Center upon request (please specify in your donation that you want the book). Thank you.

Translation of the Relics of Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker in 1953

Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker reposed in 1920. Since his repose there were four translations of his holy relics - in 1921, 1923, 1927 and 1953. The event we commemorate today was the translation which took place on September 2, 1953 from his grave in Aegina to the church at the Convent of the Holy Trinity. Noteworthy was the strong fragrance that issued from the relics during the translation. The following is the testimony of Archimandrite Timothy Kalamperidis, who was present that day:

"I came to the Monastery in October of 1952, at the age of 55. The next year - especially on September 2, 1953 - the Translation of the Relics of Saint Nektarios took place.

The translation - which was decided upon that summer - took place in the evening. It must have been 8 or 9 at night. We didn't have electricity. We worked with kerosene lanterns. Everyone around us had lit lamps and candles.

First we read the Service. After we removed the holy relics, we placed them in basins. We washed them with rosewater and other perfumes. Some of the relics were stuck to his garments. We cleaned them. A vigil then took place and we placed them in the church for veneration. The fragrance which poured forth cannot be described. It was amazing!

We placed them in the middle of the church, the head and the rest of the relics, as well as the hierarchical mitre, the staff and the dikirion and trikirion. The crowd passed and kissed them with emotion. I forgot to mention, the Bishop told me and Fr. Amphilochios Makris to take care of the preparation of the relics."

The following minutes were recorded about the event, listing also all notable people present:
