On April 4th Romfea.gr reported that the Greek government has rejected the standard pilgrimage application to visit Mount Athos during Holy Week. He had planned to visit Vatopaidi Monastery and meet with Abbot Ephraim who was recently released from prison, and attend the Passion services of Holy Week for two days. Greek officials gave as a pretext that, during Holy Week, all officials will be on Paschal holiday. The Kremlin was dissatisfied with this answer, but Greek officials have stated that they would more than welcome his visit following the holidays and be honored to be the first nation who welcomes the new President as a guest in their country.

Just when you thought the Greek government couldn't do anything more stupid than what it has already done...
ReplyDeleteThis is the same government which makes it almost impossible for its citizens in Western Europe to renew their passports. Most consulates have been downgraded to a one-man-Consular Service. You are only being served after you made an appointment. This takes several MONTHS.
ReplyDeleteThe Consulate in London even stopped making appointments because they can't cope the requests anymore!
In this way, the Greek embassies are more or less forcing its citizens in Western Europe to adopt the nationality of the country they live in.
The refusal to allow Putin to go to Mount Athos is the proper thing to do. He has used Elder Ephraim as his vehicle to solicit votes. Elder Ephraim is out on bond and has been a used as a "pawn" in a geopolitical game of chess with the Ecumenical Patriarch as a future victim. Those who support Elder Ephraim do so only based on the concept that "anything anyone does in the name of Religion is proper". Thank God that the Greek Government has drawn a line here.
