Saint Maria Skobtsova of Paris and Her Companions

Saint Maria Skobtsova of Paris (Feast Day - August 2)

On January 18, 2004, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople recognized Mother Maria Skobtsova as a saint along with her son Yuri, the priest who worked closely with her, Fr. Dimitri Klépinin, and her close friend and collaborator Ilya Fondaminsky. All four died in German concentration camps.

An excellent resource of material along with their illustrious lives can be read here.

  3. Do you know, John, what this person taught? She wanted Orthodoxy to unite with the Latins. She criticized traditional monks, especially Mt. Athos. She improperly elevated love of neighbor on the same level as love of God. The accounts of her martyrdom are unreliable and contradictory.

Did the actual Holy Synod canonize her, or was this a local canonization?

  4. The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate canonized her. I've read some things about her and not her complete works and like many other saints of the Orthodox Church, not everything she said I agree with, but that is not why she is considered a saint. She is a Saint because of her Christ-like love and for living the Gospel through extremely turbulent times. Personally I don't know what she said about the Athonites, but no matter her opinion I don't think this would exclude someone from sainthood. The same with her thoughts on ecumenism, whether they went to such extremes as you say. I don't think she elevated the love of neighbor improperly, from what I've read, so if you can share that as well then it would be worth examining. Nonetheless, even if all you say is true, I don't think they should keep a person from being canonized. Constantine the Great created greater atrocities and Isaac the Syrian taught worse heresies, nevertheless they are great Saints of the Orthodox Church, and rightly so for their own reasons.
