What Sirach Said About Joshua the Son of Nun


Sirach 46:1-8 says:

Valiant warrior was Joshua, son of Nun, aide to Moses in the prophetic office, formed to be, as his name implies, the great savior of God’s chosen ones, to punish the enemy and to give to Israel their heritage.

What glory was his when he raised his hand, to brandish his sword against the city! Who could withstand him when he fought the battles of the Lord? Was it not by that same hand the sun stopped, so that one day became two?

What Sirach Said About Elisha the Prophet


Below is an excerpt from the Book of the All-Virtuous Wisdom of Joshua ben Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus, chapter 48:12-16:

Elijah was covered by the whirlwind, and Elisha was filled with his spirit.* In his time, he didn’t tremble before any ruler, and no one oppressed him. Nothing was too great for him, and in death his body prophesied.** During his life, he performed wonders, and in death his accomplishments were marvelous.

What Sirach Said About Elijah the Prophet


Below is an excerpt from the Book of the All-Virtuous Wisdom of Joshua ben Sirach, also known as Ecclesiasticus, chapter 48:1-12. Note how this excerpt, written approximately 200 years before the coming of Christ, addresses the Prophet in a manner like most Orthodox hymns to saints. It is a direct address of praise.
