Having entered the Christmas season, we ask those who find the work of the Mystagogy Resource Center beneficial to them to help us continue our work with a generous financial gift as you are able. As an incentive, we are offering the following booklet.

In 1909 the German philosopher Arthur Drews wrote a book called "The Myth of Christ", which New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman has called "arguably the most influential mythicist book ever produced," arguing that Jesus Christ never existed and was simply a myth influenced by more ancient myths. The reason this book was so influential was because Vladimir Lenin read it and was convinced that Jesus never existed, thus justifying his actions in promoting atheism and suppressing the Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union. Moreover, the ideologues of the Third Reich would go on to implement the views of Drews to create a new "Aryan religion," viewing Jesus as an Aryan figure fighting against Jewish materialism.

Due to the tremendous influence of this book in his time, George Florovsky viewed the arguments presented therein as very weak and easily refutable, which led him to write a refutation of this text which was published in Russian by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1929. This apologetic brochure titled "Did Christ Live? Historical Evidence of Christ" was one of the first texts of his published to promote his Neopatristic Synthesis, bringing the patristic heritage to modern historical and cultural conditions. With the revival of these views among some in our time, this text is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

Never before published in English, it is now available for anyone who donates at least $20 to the Mystagogy Resource Center upon request (please specify in your donation that you want the book). Thank you.

Synaxarion of the Translation of the Relics of Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker

 Synaxarion

By Monk Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis

On the 3rd of this month [September], we celebrate the translation of the honorable relics of our Holy Father Nektarios the Bishop of Pentapolis and Wonderworker, which took place in the year of our salvation 1953.

Verses

Your relics appeared from the earth Father,
Showing its hidden grace to all.
On the third the bones of Nektarios appeared out of the earth.

This new luminous star of the Church, who was glorified with paradoxical power by God, reposed on the 9th of November, in the year of our salvation 1920, the commemoration of his passing to God having been extensively recorded. Today we celebrate the translation from the grave of his holy and miracle-flowing relics, which took place on the one thousandth five hundredth and fifty-third year, on the 3rd of September, with the Metropolitan of Hydra, Spetses and Aegina Prokopios serving as the main hierarch, surrounded by the former hierarch of Elis Antonios, as well as the island's Rulers, Monastics and sacred Clergy, and the Council of State.

Surrounded by these, the grave was opened; at once an unspeakable fragrance emerged and spread about, as if there was a large amount of myrrh in the air. Their venerable hands translated the honorable relics of the Saint into precious cases and were placed in the radiant Monastery as a treasury of inexhaustible divine grace and undepletable source of healing for various diseases and pains and sufferings. Various places and cities have been found worthy to have portions of his revered relics, for the sanctification of the faithful and the healing of the sick, and this great and sanctified father works and performs numerous miracles, and he hastens everywhere to rescue those who call upon him, as it has been widely written about.

Through his intercessions and that of all of Your Saints, Christ God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
