A Poem to Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi (chanted by Vatopaidi Choir)

Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi (+ July 1, 2009)

With lyrics set to music, a poem about the life of Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi, written and chanted by the fathers of the Sacred Monastery of Vatopaidi on Mount Athos in 15 syllable verses. Translated by John Sanidopoulos.

Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi

Our Elder Joseph -the boast of Vatopaidi-,
was a chosen offspring, an important hesychast.
Cyprus bore him, the island of saints,
and at a young age he went to live a "divine life" at Stavrovouni
where he came to live as a zealot among noetic stars,
to be a good imitator of the lives of the fathers.
Of many pious fathers and a treasury of virtues,
the Monastery was full, what divine fragrance!
Divine Providence wisely brought him
to settle in parts of Athos, the neptic star,
to be at the feet of a magnificent and experienced saint,
who had the prayer of the heart in his life.
With suffering and asceticism and victorious struggles,
he routed the passions, and burned his enemies.
The Panagia sent him for the countless slanders
that were coming, from the jealousies,
a grace-flowing icon, which he had as a hope,
and he called her Pantanassa, a ray of consolation.
Around him gathered deer that thirsted,
and he quenched them with nectar, so their unlearned lips could,
with desire sip and enter the line of the Fathers and pull.
Finally the Panagia, brought him to Vatopaidi
to be a support for the Monastery, which he took as a leader.
He had difficulties here also, envy did not cease,
that guides the imperfect and brings so much pain.
He lived many days and illumined the crowd,
with words of admonition, he raised morale.
Our unforgettable father, who forgave all,
do not forget us your children, whom you loved so much!
