Homily on the Coming New Year (St. Kallinikos of Edessa)

By the Grace of the Lord, we are at the beginning of the New Year. Behind us is the past and before us is the future. We were thinking a lot. We learn many lessons. It would be incomprehensible and completely unjustified, for reasonable people to arrive at stations in life, without conclusions.

Being at the beginning of the new year of the Lord's Goodness, we must carry out a double duty in the most serious way, the duty of Gratitude to God and Trust in Him.

Gratitude to our God and Father for the past year. During this year, the goodness of God bestowed upon us many good things. Let's not forget the apostolic words: "In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). In His divine presence and goodness we live and move and exist. All good things are from the gift-giving God.

Saint Kallinikos of Edessa, a Balanced and Transfigured Man

Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos, in his sermon today in honor of the feast of his spiritual father who was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate two years ago, Saint Kallinikos of Edessa, referred to the glorious repose of this Saint of our days, which came after the feast of the Transfiguration of Christ and after he said a prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos, in view of the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

This is important, because he loved both of these feasts. He spoke every day during this period about the Panagia, about her faith, her purity, her patience, her silence, but also about the Transfiguration of Christ.

Saint Kallinikos himself was a balanced man, a transfigured man.

Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos writes the following regarding the acquaintance of Saint Kallinikos of Edessa with Elder Epiphanios Theodoropoulos:

My acquaintance with the late Fr. Epiphanios was made through my Elder the Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopia, Kallinikos.

They had been acquainted even while they were laymen, and were associated with an undisturbed personal friendship that was expressed in a variety of ways.

They talked on the phone every day and exchanged many thoughts on current ecclesiastical and social issues.

Two Chapels Dedicated to the Newly-Canonized Saints Kallinikos of Edessa and Sophrony of Essex in Nafpaktos

In honor of the one year anniversary of the canonization of his Elder, Saint Kallinikos of Edessa, which took place on 23 June 2020, Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos celebrated a Divine Liturgy, preached a sermon, did an artoklasia and blessed a festal kollyva on Tuesday 23 June 2021. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the first chapel dedicated to Saint Kallinikos, which is in the Church of Saint Paraskevi in Nafpaktos. The consecration of this chapel took place the day before, on the Monday of the Holy Spirit. Metropolitan Hierotheos expressed how he was deeply moved to consecrate this chapel as a Bishop to his late Elder, whom he greatly revered and wrote books about.

Metropolitan Hierotheos further explained how the two Holy Altars in the two niches on the north side and the south side of the Church of Saint Pareskevi will both be chapels. The one is the already consecrated Chapel of Saint Kallinikos of Edessa and the other will be consecrated next month and will be dedicated to Saint Sophrony of Essex, another holy Elder whom Metropolitan Hierotheos had many conversations with and authored books about.

"And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him." (Lk. 23:33)

With these simple words Luke the Evangelist mentions the greatest event in world history. The biggest crime ever committed. The most sacred sacrifice offered on a scaffold.

Christ on the Cross, as a common criminal. O! inconceivable condescension of the incarnate Word! The cross was then the most dishonorable instrument of death. The worst of the convicts were crucified. But since the Saint of saints was raised on the Cross, it has become an instrument of life, an instrument of redemption and salvation.

Translation of the Sacred Relics of Saint Kallinikos of Edessa

On 15 October 2020, in an atmosphere of joy and devotion, a Festive Hierarchical Divine Liturgy took place at the Cathedral of the Holy Protection in Edessa, to celebrate the translation of the sacred relics of the newly-canonized Saint Kallinikos of Edessa. He had been buried in the Public Cemetery of Edessa, because he wanted to be close to his people that he loved and served in his life, but now that he is canonized his sacred relics were transferred into the Cathedral of the Holy Protection, where he will be venerated by the faithful in an ecclesiastical atmosphere. The exhumation of the sacred relics took place on September 25th.

The festive celebration was officiated by nineteen hierarchs and numerous clergy and monastics, together with a crowd of the faithful despite the pandemic restrictions. Both Metropolitan Joel of Edessa and Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos, who knew the Saint intimately and have written about him, delivered the homilies. The service was also attended by local authorities and relatives of the newly-canonized saint.

On the eighth of this month, we commemorate our Holy Father Kallinikos the Bishop of Edessa.

We honor Kallinikos of Edessa,
A holy Spirit-bearing Bishop.

This beloved of God Bishop was born in Sitaralonon of Thermos in Aitolia on the 26th of the month of January in the year 1919, to pious parents. From a young age he was catechized piously and venerably. He entered the sacred clergy and became prominent as a liturgist and preacher. In the year 1967 he was elected the Metropolitan of Edessa and Pella. He remained a Bishop until 1984 when he departed as an excellent example to all. His commemoration is celebrated on the eighth of August.

Pastoral Encyclical of Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos on Saint Kallinikos of Edessa

Beloved brethren and beloved children in the Lord,

Recently the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, during its Session on the 23rd of June 2020, decided to include the Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia Kallinikos into the list of Saints of the Church. In the Press Release of the Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate it says: "It was decided, on the basis of a report of the Canonical Commission, for the late Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia Kallinikos to be canonized, and his memory in the future is to be celebrated on the 8th of August."

Metropolitan Kallinikos of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia (+ 1984) Has Been Canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate (Brief Biography and Hymns Included)

On Tuesday 23 June 2020 the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate convened at the Orthodox Center of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Chambesy, Geneva where they officially numbered among the Saints of the Orthodox Church the ever-memorable Metropolitan Kallinikos of Edessa, Pella, and Almopia (1919-1984). That evening the bells of the parishes throughout the Metropolis of Edessa rang for joy at the announcement. Metropolitan Joel of Edessa went to the tomb of the newly-glorified Saint, where all those present chanted his Apolytikion, Kontakion and Megalynarion composed by Metropolitan Joel himself. His feast day has been established to be celebrated on the 8th of August.
