The Holy Spring of Saint George in Mammari

The village of Mammari, in the province of Nicosia in Cyprus, is inextricably linked to Saint George. In fact, in the village there are two churches dedicated to the Saint, while at a distance of about 500 meters, to the southeast of the churches, is the Holy Spring of the Saint.

According to local legend, when a great drought passed through the area, Saint George was also riding through on his horse, and having become thirsty, he found no water anywhere. Going up the mountain, the horse tapped its feet on the rocks and immediately there began to gush water. In fact, the footprints of the horse can be seen until today on the rock next to the Holy Spring.

After that, the faithful carved a path into the mountain to a height of about 2-3 meters and a width of 1 meter, to fit, according to legend, Saint George with his horse. In the depths of the Holy Spring, which is about 40 meters, the image of the Saint was formed from the mold and salt, further strengthening the faith of the inhabitants that this water has indeed been blessed by Saint George, whether you believe the background story or not.

There are also many cases when the sick were cured after being washed with or drinking from the water of the Holy Spring of Saint George. The water was gushing until the beginning of the 1990's.
