The Official Liturgical Services for the Feast of St. Porphyrios of Kavsokalyva

The Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in its gathering on the 5th of May 2014, approved the Services of Praise for Saint Porphyrios of Kavsokalyva, which were composed by the theologian and philologist Evangelos Karadimos, shortly after the repose of the Saint (December 2, 1991), and were formally issued in 1998.

Elder Porphyryios was inducted into the ranks of the saints of the Orthodox Church by decision of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which was received on the 27th of November of the year 2013 and announced the same day. That decision was enthusiastically accepted by the Pan-Orthodox fullness of the Church. A few minutes after the announcement of this decision, church bells joyfully peeled throughout the earth and doxologies were offered up to God, Who is wondrous in His saints. On that day the memorials to Elder Porphyrios offered in the churches changed into doxological Divine Liturgies in his memory and the memorial kollyva were blessed as kollyva for the Saint. The people of God with fervor accepted the decision of the canonization of Elder Porphyrios to be among the honored Saints of our Church and they rushed to the churches to express their gratitude and thanks for the beneficence granted to them by God through the prayers of Saint Porphyrios. Within a few days the following services were made available and for this reason it is offered and republished.

The services at hand, although drafted in the language of traditional ecclesiastical hymnography, is easily understood because the poetry it has chosen is simple in structure and in easily comprehensible vocabulary.

On the 2nd of the month of December,
we remember our Venerable and God-bearing Father
Porphyrios of Kavsokalyva, the clairvoyant and wonderworker.

Apolytikion. Tone 1. The citizen of the desert.
The offspring of Evia,
the adornment of the Ecumene,
the initiated in Theology,
and the genuine friend of Christ,
Porphyrios, O faithful, let us honor,
who was filled with all the gifts of grace from childhood.
The demon possessed are redeemed,
and the sick are healed who cry out with faith:
Glory to Him who gave you might,
Glory to Him who sanctified you,
Glory to Him who operates through you healings for all.

Kontakion. Tone Plagal 4. To thee the champion leader.
The most-holy temple of the Paraklete
and the most-beloved of the all-pure Theotokos,
Porphyrios let us praise from our hearts.
He loves and heals all and guards
and intercedes as we succeed in theosis.
For this let us cry out: Rejoice, Father Porphyrios.

Megalynarion.
Rejoice treasury of the gifts of grace and the wonderworking source of healings. Rejoice the new prophet of the Church, Porphyrios, thrice-blessed, the boast of Athos.
